There are actually quite a few places that offer steak in Bath. The best was Cau but unfortunately it recently closed down leaving us on a mission to find a new venue. First on our list to try was Bar and Block next to the Premier Inn in Bath.
Whilst it is very easy to spend a lot of money on a steak dinner we are looking for somewhere which has great food for a decent price similar to Cau.
One of the unique things about Bar and Block is the beef flavoured popcorn you get while you are deciding what to order.
It sounds a little odd but it is actually very nice and a unique item to have to ensure you remember your experience.
Just a small Starter
Salt and Pepper Squid
If there is one starter I do enjoy it’s Salt and Pepper Squid. Lightly covered in breadcrumbs and served with a lemon and garlic mayo and a wedge of lemon this is how all meals should start. Highly recommended if you like squid and even if you don’t it’s certainly worth a try. It is a bit spicy as it contains chillies.
How do you like your steak?
My personal preference is for steak to be cooked medium rare whereas my wife prefers hers medium well. We both like a spicy sauce so we both get a peppercorn sauce each and at Bar and Block the steaks come with a small salad or triple cooked chunky chips.
Medium Rare Sirloin Steak and Chips
This steak was cooked well and the trio of peppercorn sauce was delicious. Not at all over powering or salty and possibly one of the best I have tasted. Chips are also nice and crispy but fluffy inside.
Medium Well Sirloin Steak and Salad
Another well cooked steak with trio of peppercorn sauce and this time served with a small side salad.
What do we think?
It took us a while to get around to trying Bar and Block and that was certainly a mistake. The squid starter was absolutely delicious and reminds us of the same dish Cau had on their menu. It is a bit spicy but the lemon and garlic mayo does help cool it a little.
The main meal – Steaks
Our main meals were very decently priced and also tasted very good. The flavour of the steak was good. Our steaks were cooked as requested and the trio of peppercorn sauce is possibly the best one we have found so far. It’s not overpowering in flavour but also not salty like some can be.
The salad did seem to be very tomato heavy and not very green. My wife was not too fond of the tomatoes so I had most of those. My chips were fantastic as they were crunchy to the bite and yet remained fluffy inside.
On our first trip we did stand at the front door waiting to be seated for a good few mins as two of the waitresses were just chatting to each other at the bar but this has not happened since.
That delay did put us off going back again for a few months however we have now been back to eat there two or three times and each visit has been very good.
Wait what about dessert?
We are sadly not able to comment on the desserts. After starters and a main we are usually too full to try them. Bar and Block do actually have a good variety to choose from and all sound equally delicious. We will attempt to try a dessert on our next visit and give you our verdict.
One more thing
I do love a good strawberry Daiquiri and this was a very good one indeed but I only had the one and managed to walk home.
Remember don’t drink and Drive!
